E-learning

E-learning Overview

Can Internet provide an environment for learning? How the web is being used as a medium for learning? Learning has become a vital business function, but old-style training can't keep pace with Internet time. Training has grown too important to be delegated to training departments. E-learning is attractive to corporations because it promises better use of time, accelerated learning, global reach, fast pace, and accountability. It's manageable and it cuts paperwork as well as administrative overhead.

Universities, Schools, Colleges and other Educational Institutions are not far behind. Apart from the conventional method of pedagogy, E-learning provides the students that extra edge over others in a competitive environment. With the vast amount of information being available on the internet it becomes an indispensable medium of sharing and exchange of information. With this project we take this idea forward by providing a scalable system which would aid in this process. The system can be used either as a complement to the conventional method of pedagogy or as a whole educational institution in itself.

What is E-learning?

Electronic learning (or E-learning or E-learning) is a type of Technology supported education/learning (TSL) where the medium of instruction is through computer technology, particularly involving digital technologies. E-learning has been defined as "pedagogy empowered by digital technology". In some instances, no face- to- face interaction takes place. E-learning is used interchangeably in a wide variety of contexts. In companies, it refers to the strategies that use the company network to deliver training courses to employees. In the United States, it is defined as a planned teaching/learning experience that uses a wide spectrum of technologies, mainly Internet or computer-based, to reach learners. Lately in most Universities, E-learning is used to define a specific mode to attend a course or programs of study where the students rarely, if ever, attend face-to-face for on-campus access to educational facilities, because they study online.

A Complete E-learning Solution diagram

E-learning means that you no longer need to spend long periods travelling to a location to attend a course. You can now have access to learning when you want it, at the time you want it day or night, wherever you want it at home, at work, in your local library. For many students this has opened up a new, much more flexible and accessible world of learning that was previously closed to them due to disability or family circumstances, or perhaps due to the fact that the course they wanted was on the other side of the world. In other words, there are now no longer any geographical constraints to learning; E-learning brings learning to people, not people to learning. E-learning empowers learners to manage their own learning and in the most appropriate way for each learner. We all learn in different ways - reading, watching, exploring, researching, interacting, doing, communicating, collaborating, discussing, sharing knowledge and experiences. E-learning learners can have access to a wide range of learning resources: both materials and people, and in this way each learner can have an individualized, personalized experience, where they access the learning that is best for them.

Why do you need an E-learning Solution?

It is the catalyst that is changing the whole model of learning in this century for school pupils, university students, for employees, for the ongoing training and development of professionals like engineers, doctors and teachers - in fact for just about anyone who wants to find out something on either a formal or casual basis. E-learning makes learning exciting, engaging and compelling. Hard and boring subjects can be made easier, more interesting and appealing with E-learning. Learning is a social activity, powerful and enduring learning experiences can be achieved, not just through content, but through the use of online communities and networks. Here learners are encouraged to communicate, collaborate and share knowledge. In this way, E-learning can support "learning through reflection and discussion".

Goals of E-learning

E-learning lessons are generally designed to guide students through information or to help students perform in specific tasks. Information based E-learning content communicates information to the student. Examples include content that distributes the history or facts related to a service, company, or product. In information-based content, there is no specific skill to be learned. In performance-based content, the lessons build off of a procedural skill in which the student is expected to increase proficiency.

  • Our E-learning Solution has a system of privileges that makes it possible to create different types of users - for instance, members, staff - that each can see and do different things on the site.
  • Our E-learning Solution is designed to be easily extended through "modules"--blocks of code that provide extra functionality or enhancements.
  • The basic look and feel of website can be changed through different "themes". As with modules, there are both core and contributed themes.

Benefits of E-learning versus traditional classroom settings

E-learning can provide for major benefits for the organizations and individuals involved.

  • Reducing environmental impact: E-learning allows people to avoid travel, thus reducing the overall carbon output. The fact that it takes place in a virtual environment also allows some reduction of paper usage. With virtual notes instead of paper notes and online assessments instead of paper assessments, E-learning is a more environmentally friendly solution.
  • Quality education, made affordable: The fact that instructors of the highest caliber can share their knowledge across borders allows students to attend courses across physical, political, and economic boundaries. Recognized experts have the opportunity of making information available internationally, to anyone interested at minimum costs. This can drastically reduce the costs of higher education, making it much more affordable and accessible to the masses. An internet connection, a computer, and a projector would allow an entire classroom in a third world university to benefit from the knowledge of an opinion leader.
  • Convenience and flexibility to learners: in many contexts, E-learning is self-paced and the learning sessions are available 24x7. Learners are not bound to a specific day/time to physically attend classes. They can also pause learning sessions at their convenience.
